How to start a charity car rally
We're three friends driving an old Renault Twingo across the world to raise money for the communities we meet along the way. Here's everything we wish someone had told us before we started The Love Rally — the planning, the fundraising, the paperwork, and the bits nobody puts in the brochure.
What is a charity car rally?
A charity car rally is a long-distance road trip — usually in a cheap, unsuitable car — where the driving itself is the fundraiser. Teams pick a cause, sponsors back them by the kilometre or in a lump sum, and the rally becomes a moving story that pulls donors along for the ride. The famous Mongol Rally and Plymouth-Banjul are the blueprints; you can run a smaller version from your own front door for a local charity in a weekend.
Pick a cause worth driving for
Your cause is the answer to "why should anyone donate?". The strongest charity rallies pick a cause that's specific enough to picture: a single village school, a community clinic, a neighbourhood food project. Vague causes raise vague amounts of money.
Decide early whether you'll fundraise for an existing registered charity or, like us, run it independently and hand cash directly to projects on the route. Choose the right (old) car
The car is half the story. A sensible modern SUV doesn't make headlines; a 1.2-litre hatchback on a 20,000 km route does. Pick something cheap to buy, cheap to fix at the side of the road, and emotionally ridiculous enough that strangers want to take a photo of it.
- Buy at least three months before departure — you need time to find what breaks.
- Replace cambelt, water pump, brakes, tyres and battery as a baseline, even if "they look fine".
- Carry the consumables you can't easily buy abroad: oil, coolant, belts, bulbs, fuses, a spare wheel.
- Learn the basics: changing a wheel, jumping a battery, reading the dashboard codes.
Plot a route you can actually finish
Sketch the route on paper before you touch a map app. Start with: where do you leave from, where do you finish, and which countries genuinely interest you? Then layer in the boring constraints — visas, ferries, mountain passes that close in winter, regions to avoid.
Pad the schedule by at least 30%. Breakdowns, border queues, paperwork at consulates and the occasional rest day add up fast. A rally that has to race the calendar stops being fun and starts being a logistics job.
Raise the money
Two pots of money: the rally pot (car, fuel, ferries, visas, spares, insurance, food) and the charity pot (every cent of which goes to the cause). Keep them in separate accounts from day one — donors care.
For the charity pot, the things that actually move the needle:
- A single public donation page with a visible goal and live total.
- A short, honest video explaining the cause and the car.
- Local press in your home town — they love the "absurd car, good cause" angle.
- Corporate sponsorship in exchange for stickers on the car and tagged posts.
- A regular update rhythm so the story stays alive for the whole drive.
Sort the paperwork
The unglamorous bit. Build a folder (paper and PDF) with: passports plus colour copies, international driving permits, vehicle V5/registration, green-card or international insurance, carnet de passage if your route needs one, vaccination records, and printed visa letters. Check every requirement against each country's embassy site, not a forum — rules change.
If you're handling donor money, decide upfront how you'll account for it: receipts for every handover, photos of the projects you fund, and a public log of where it went. Trust is the whole product.
Build a small, sturdy team
Two or three people is the sweet spot. One driver, one navigator, one person who can fix things and stay calm when the alternator dies in a Bulgarian car park. Talk honestly before you leave about money, driving shifts, rest days, and what you'll do if someone wants to go home early. See who's in our team.
Tell the story as you go
A charity rally that nobody hears about raises nothing. Set up one channel you'll actually keep up with — Instagram, a newsletter, a live map — and post short, honest updates. Days the car breaks down are better content than days it doesn't.
